Meet Martha: finding strength, rhythm, and a moment for herself in the chaos of mum life
Martha is mum to Rex (3) and Ava (7 months), and like so many of us, she’s in that beautifully hectic season of life where carving out time for herself is no small feat. After meeting Gen at antenatal classes, she joined The Barre Coach postnatal series and hasn’t looked back since. From nap-time workouts to spicy core burners, Martha has found a routine that keeps her centred, strong, and proud of every minute she moves - even on the busiest of days.
1. Tell us a little about yourself! What’s your daily life like?
I’m Martha, mum to Rex (3) and Ava (7 months). Daily life is hectic to say the least! I’m at home with Ava every day, so finding time to squeeze in something just for me can be tricky but I always feel amazing when I manage it.
2. What made you decide to try Barre, and how did you find The Barre Coach?
I met Gen at our antenatal classes just before our boys were born. When she announced she was launching a postnatal workout series I could follow from home, I immediately signed up! It was the nudge I needed to start moving again, and I felt safe and ready under Gen’s guidance. After finishing the series, I worked my way through the rest of the content and found my rhythm again - being able to work out at home with no pressure was perfect for me.
3. How do Barre classes fit into your weekly routine and how do you stay motivated?
I aim for 2–3 classes a week, more if I can! I’m at home five days with a baby and two with a toddler, so I usually fit classes in during a morning nap before the day properly starts. Including some intentional movement that’s purely for me makes me feel more centred - that’s what keeps me motivated.
4. What’s been the biggest change you’ve noticed since starting Barre?
There’s never been a day where I’ve regretted doing a Barre class. I always feel incredible afterwards, and I’m often genuinely proud to have finished the tougher ones! I’ve tried most workouts at most London studios over the years, and I always had to hype myself up to get going. With Barre, I don’t feel like that at all - I love the burn, the results, and that post-class high.
5. Do you have a favourite class or type of workout?
I’m seven months postpartum, so now I’ve completed the postnatal series (again!), I’m focusing on rebuilding my core strength. Anything with a spicy core focus is my go-to. The app is so user-friendly, and I’m always discovering classes that fit the time I have and how I’m feeling that day. The Pure Barre series is also a firm favourite.
6. What’s your workout “must-have”?
Lululemon Align pants have been with me from the very beginning - through pregnancy and beyond! I’m also a big Varley fan when my bank balance allows (usually birthdays and Christmas!).
7. What would you say to someone thinking about joining The Barre Coach?
Absolutely do it! If you want to feel like you’re making every minute and movement count, it’s the perfect option. No regrets.
8. What’s one podcast episode you’d recommend to The Barre Coach gang?
I recently listened to Happy Mum, Happy Baby with Keira Knightley, and she was so refreshing in her take on motherhood. For any sleep-deprived mums who need a reminder that they’re doing a great job - give it a listen!
