The Role of Barre in Recovery: A Case Study

Rebecca had torn her labrum and had impingement from 2 bone spurs, one on the ball, one on the socket of the hip, causing extreme pain. With guidance from her physio, Rebecca joined The Barre Coach Online Studio to help with her recovery.

“I fell in love with it immediately - it felt like a ‘proper’ workout, but critically for the injury, it helped me isolate the muscles I needed to focus on, I could pick really targeted workouts through the selections on your platform, and it worked - it’s been an absolute pivotal part of my rehab.” Rebecca McNeil, CEO.

Rebecca’s treatment plan.

Following an MRI, Rebecca went to see Flo of Flow Physio London in the Autumn of 2020. After a thorough assessment incorporating strength & range of motion testing, a programme of specific exercises was put together alongside release work to reduce pain, allowing for free movement alongside a holistic management programme.

The focus with exercise was to strengthen the posterior chain. Rebecca needed to focus on a strength programme reducing the impact on the hips as her usual routine focused on high impact exercise.

That was when Flo introduced her to The Barre Coach Online Studio, an effective well rounded programme.

When asked what sort of impact her Barre practice had had on her injury, here’s what she had to say;

“Huge. And frankly my morale during Covid as we were just entering that horrid second lockdown, and a) it gave me some exercise I could really focus on, and b) you do make me laugh. I was sceptical having done one in person barre class years before and found it very lacking, but willing to give it a go as I did ballet for 18 years from the age of 3. I fell in love with it immediately - it felt like a ‘proper’ workout, but critically for the injury it helped me isolate the muscles I needed to focus on, I could pick really targeted workouts through the selections on your platform, and it worked - it’s been an absolute pivotal part of my rehab, and my muscles are way more in balance now.

I do at least 3 classes a week alongside my cycling, hiking, and weight training. I’ve avoided the surgery I thought was inevitable, and I’ve managed to get back to short runs this year - which is a huge breakthrough.”
