It’s nice to have moments in time when we feel we can wipe the slate clean and start afresh: the start of a new week, or a new month or the beginning of a New Year. It’s great to have goals to work towards if this is what keeps you motivated and makes you thrive, but if it only adds extra pressure and stress then now (or arguably ever!) is not the time to do it.
If we look at the definition of “wellness”, it’s all about caring for and being kind to yourself, calming your stress levels, and achieving a balance in your life. How you achieve this will be different for everyone; it might be a timeout for an hour a day to catch up on your favourite book, a wintry walk with your pet pooch, a chance to watch your favourite movie, a cosy stretch, a heart-pumping HIIT class or pulsing your way through a Barre class. Whatever it is for you, make sure it’s ticking all of those wellness boxes and it’s helping you to feel a little more like you every day. If there was ever a time to be kind to yourself, it’s right now and for many of us, that won’t come from setting unrealistic health and fitness goals and putting lots of pressure on ourselves for the New Year.
Exercise is hugely important not only to keep you physically healthy but more importantly, mentally healthy. If you can find some form of movement that you actually enjoy doing (that means you don’t dread the class starting and there’s no clock-watching throughout!) then you are onto a winner! Something that I hear often from The Barre Coach members is that previously they’d never found a form of exercise that they actually enjoyed and now they have, they find it much easier to stay consistent with their classes. Personally, I knew Barre was the exercise for me when I realised it was the only class I was taking that I never clock-watched in. With the interactive nature of the classes, you feel like you’re in a studio with other members and honestly, I’d bet that we smile more than we pulse (and we pulse a lot!).
If you are setting resolutions for 2021 then make sure you’re focusing on the journey rather than the end destination. Don’t just give yourself a pat on the back when you achieve the end goal, celebrate every small win along the way. Amid a global pandemic, just putting one foot in front of the other and keeping your head above water is an achievement in itself!
